TO SEE AND TO BE SEEN

Designregio Kortrijk matches companies with young or established designers, entrepreneurs and artists and offers a cubicle, the ‘Kiosk’, in the centre of Kortrijk to display their products or services. The ‘Vitrines’, or the window display of the Designregio Kortrijk office, are offered as well to exhibit their makings.

Architectural studio De Baes Architecture and filmmaker Rijsbrecht Verschaffel amaze with an installation that absorbs the Kiosk’s surrounding, transforms it and exhibits it.

The Kiosk&Vitrines are mostly used to exhibit certain products. Now, the environment and yourself are put on display…

De Baes Architecture and designer/artist Rijsbrecht Verschaffel, in collaboration with Allaert Aluminium, AGC Glass Europe, Deknudt Mirrors and Gi Van Aalst, challenge us to think outside of the box and to look at the city and ourselves differently. Together, they drew up a concept in which the architecture of the Kiosk is dealt with in order to transform the surrounding public area. Thanks to the interplay of glass, mirrors and aluminium, the Kiosk blends with its surrounding and an interaction between passer-by, spectator and the city is created.

De Baes is a young architecture bureau, run by engineer-architect Joris De Baes, which focuses on the development of spatial strategies that transform the built-up area. The studio sees the fast-changing urban context, boundaries and apparent opposites as the basis of collaboration, research and development. Their teams are a reflection of the new Europe, with varying backgrounds and ideas. De Baes Architecture is strongly motivated to create spaces for this generation, marked by an unlimited diversity, togetherness and relations.

For this project, Designregio Kortrijk matched them with Belgian visual artist and filmmaker Rijsbrecht Verschaffel. Rijsbrecht graduated in 2014 at the KASK School of Arts Ghent. He works as an independent filmmaker and since his graduation he has worked on several film projects. In 2014 he was selected to represent Belgium in an international video-contest ‘On the Road to Rio’, the build up for the World Championship soccer in 2014.

For the realization of the installation in the Kiosk, the designers searched for (regional) specialists with an international standard. They automatically found multinational AGC Glass Europe, Allaert Aluminium (Harelbeke) and Deknudt Mirrors (Deerlijk). A perfect team that put its weight behind the project and offered its expertise together with the different reflecting materials.

Rijsbrecht Verschaffel filmed the transformations surrounding the Kiosk and made a film that is projected onto the Vitrines or window displays of the Designregio Kortrijk office. The filmed images are projected thanks to Gi Van Aalst, specialist in sound, light and video. In the Vitrines, people are confronted with their changing context. The installation wants to amaze and confront people with new points of view.

Joris De Baes will gladly offer more explanation on the installation. Contact info@designregio-kortrijk.be for more information.
